We're here to break it down for you, plain and simple, so you can find that perfect board and get out there on the waves.

What's Out There
First up, let's talk about what kinds of boards you'll see:
Shortboards are what you want for quick, sharp moves on big waves. They're not the easiest to learn on, though.
Fish boards are shorter too but thicker and wider, making them a good pick for smaller waves and giving you a bit of that maneuverability without sacrificing stability.
Funboards are your middle-of-the-road option. Not too long, not too short, they're good for a lot of different waves and skills.
Longboards are the big guys. They're great for beginners because they're stable and easy to catch waves with. Plus, they're a blast if you're into a chill ride or want to nose ride.
Picking a Board for Your Skill Level
If you're just starting out, go for a longboard or a soft-top. They're going to make your life a lot easier when you're learning.
For those of you who've got a few waves under your belt, maybe look at funboards or a bigger fish board. You'll catch waves easier than with a shortboard but still get to play around a bit.
Advanced surfers, you probably already know what you like, but there's always room to experiment. Shortboards are where it's at for precision and doing some fancy footwork.
Think About the Waves
Small to medium waves? Fish and funboards can make those a lot of fun.
Big, powerful waves call for a shortboard to help you keep control and make quick moves.
Your Body Type Matters
Taller or heavier? You'll want a board with more volume to keep you floating well.
Fitness level counts too. If you're in good shape, you might be able to handle a smaller, trickier board.
Tips to Take Home
Talk to the folks at your local surf shop or other surfers. They know the waves in your area and can give you great advice.
Try before you buy if you can. Some shops have demo days where you can test out different boards.
Take your time picking a board. What feels good in the shop might not feel great in the water.
Where to from here?
Finding the right surfboard is all about what makes you feel good in the water. It's going to be your partner out there, so you want to make sure it's a good fit. It might take a bit of searching and trying different boards, but when you find the right one, you'll know. It'll feel just right, and you'll be stoked every time you paddle out.
